Trump Wants to Rename AI. I Say, Call It Smart IT.

Donald Trump recently said what a lot of people have probably thought but never said out loud: he hates the name “Artificial Intelligence.” His take? “It’s not artificial—it’s genius.” And he thinks the name should be changed.

Honestly? He might be onto something.

I’ve been around naming, branding, and digital identity for a long time. One thing I’ve learned: names shape perception. They tell people what to expect. And “Artificial Intelligence” doesn’t really do that anymore. It sounds experimental. Unfinished. Even a little threatening.

But that’s not what’s happening here.

This isn’t some sci-fi dream. AI is already running support desks, building presentations, diagnosing illnesses, teaching languages, writing code—you name it. It’s not artificial anymore. It’s infrastructure. It’s real. It’s smart.

So here’s my take: AI is IT. But smarter.

Let’s call it Smart IT. Because people get that. IT has always been about tools that work. Tools you trust. Tools that move the business forward. Smart IT just happens to be a lot more capable.

And if you want a little fun with it, the internet already has the perfect domain ending: .it.com.

Think:

  • Fix.it.com
  • Build.it.com
  • Automate.it.com

Clean, simple, and more accurate than “AI” has ever been.

Trump might not be a technologist, but he gets branding. If his offhand remark pushes people to rethink the label, I’m all for it. The name AI never fit. Smart IT does.
