‘Hans Niemann vs. You’ Project Nominates for 29th Annual Webby Awards

Hans Niemann vs. You: The Largest AI-Powered Online Chess Battle, created by it.com Domains in partnership with the Web Summit and World Chess, has been nominated for Best AI, Immersive & Games – AI Apps & Experiences General (Media & Entertainment) in the 29th Annual Webby Awards.

Hailed as the “Internet’s highest honor” by The New York Times, the Webby Awards is the leading international awards organization honoring excellence on the Internet, including:

  • Websites and Mobile Sites
  • Video and Film
  • Advertising, Media and PR
  • Apps and Software
  • Social
  • Podcasts
  • AI, Immersive and Games
  • Creators

Over the years, projects from companies such as HBO, Nike, The BBC, Gucci, NASA, and National Geographic have been nominated for the award.

This year, the Webby Awards received nearly 13,000 submissions. ‘Hans Niemann vs. You’ Project made it into the top 12% and are now competing for the win in the Best AI, Immersive & Games – AI Apps & Experiences General (Media & Entertainment) category.

Hans Niemann faced the AI-assisted World Team in an interactive match at the Web Summit in Lisbon on November 13, 2024. The game, accessible to 106,638 participants from 132 countries, broke the record set by Viswanathan Anand in 2012 with 60,000 online opponents. The match lasted 42 minutes and 71 moves, hosted on chess.it.com, and featured an AI assistant for real-time strategy. This event demonstrated how technology can enhance chess engagement and accessibility, setting a new standard for global interactive competitions.

When we were doing the project, we wanted to show how the chess and technological worlds can be combined, complement each other and make each other better. We didn’t think about awards. It’s even more pleasant to be nominated for awards like the Webby Awards and to realize that the professional world has appreciated our project and contribution to the industry,

said Andrey Insarov, founder and CEO of it.com Domains.

The winner will be chosen by Internet industry experts including Amelia Dimoldenberg, Host & Producer of Chicken Shop Date and Founder of Dimz Inc; Todd Kaplan, Chief Marketing Officer at Kraft Heinz; Jaime Teevan, Chief Scientist at Microsoft; Marine Notté, Head of International TV at Hulu; Cara Cusumano, Festival Director of The Tribeca Film Festival; Gerald Youngblood, Chief Marketing Officer, Lenovo; Katie Couric, Journalist; and Quinta Brunson, Writer, Director, and Actor, among others.

All nominees also participate in the Webby People’s Voice Award, the winner of which is selected by public vote until April 17. You can vote for the ‘Hans Niemann vs. You’ Project on the Webby Awards website after a short registration.

Winners of the Webby Awards will be announced on Tuesday, April 22, 2025, and honored in a star-studded show at Cipriani Wall Street.

Nominees like it.com Domains are setting the standard for innovation and creativity on the Internet. It is an incredible achievement to be selected among the best from the nearly 13,000 entries we received this year,

said Nick Borenstein, General Manager of The Webby Awards.
